Buruj Sports Academy in Ikorodu, Lagos, joyfully celebrated the return of 14 year old Raheem Salaudeen from a developmental tour in Morocco with Nigeria’s U15 national team. The academy organised a warm welcome for Salaudeen, highlighting the pride they take in his achievements.

Salaudeen was one of 26 players selected through a rigorous three-phase process under the 2024 NFF/FIFA Technical Development Scheme for U15 players, which initially scouted 120 talents. The tour, held from December 10 to 15, included two friendly matches against Moroccan youth teams, ending in a 2-0 loss and a 1-1 draw for the Nigerian side.

Reflecting on his experience, Salaudeen described it as transformative. “Travelling with the team and representing Nigeria is an experience I cannot describe. I am very happy and thank God for everything,” he said.

The celebration at Buruj Sports Academy underscored the institution’s commitment to nurturing future football stars. Salaudeen’s success has served as an inspiration for his peers, reinforcing the academy’s reputation as a hub for developing Nigerian football talent.

We, as a nation, should take immense pride in the structures that identify and cultivate young talent. However, much remains to be done to ensure these budding stars have sustained pathways to success. Salaudeen’s experience showcases the potential of the NFF/FIFA Technical Development Scheme, but initiatives like this must be expanded and consistently funded to reach more young talents across the country.

The sense of community displayed by Buruj Sports Academy demonstrates how nurturing environments can inspire young players to strive for excellence. Their commitment to celebrating Salaudeen’s achievement not only motivates their players but also strengthens their reputation as a top tier football academy.

While Salaudeen’s story is inspiring, it should also serve as a call to action for stakeholders to invest in football infrastructure, coaching, and youth tournaments. Nigeria’s vast pool of talent can only be fully tapped with a united effort from clubs, academies, and the government.

As we applaud Salaudeen’s accomplishments, let us not forget the collective effort needed to ensure every young player in Nigeria has the opportunity to follow in his footsteps and shine on the global stage.
