Former Flying Eagles striker Jerome Akor took France by storm

Former Flying Eagles striker Jerome Akor made an impressive start in France, scoring four goals in his first three games after his transfer from Norway. Akor was the leading scorer in the Eliteserien with 15 goals before his record transfer from Lillestrom to Ligue 1 club Montpellier. Many experts had anticipated a move to Belgium first, but Akor transitioned directly to one of Europeโ€™s major leagues.

Joining Montpellier in the summer of 2023 on a four year contract, Akor faced and overcame new challenges in Ligue 1. He scored twice on his debut against Le Havre and then added another goal against Olympique Marseille. By October, he had seven goals, becoming one of the top scorers in France. However, injuries, a loss of his starting spot, and a dip in confidence affected his run, and he did not score again until April 2024, when he netted his eighth goal against FC Nantes.

Despite these challenges, Akor contributed significantly to Montpellier, scoring eight goals and providing an assist in 32 appearances, totalling 2,264 minutes. In the Coupe de France, he added two goals and an assist in just 19 minutes. Montpellier finished 12th in the Ligue 1 standings, 12 points clear of the drop zone. Akorโ€™s market value has risen to 12 million euros from 4 million euros, reflecting his progress.

Although he has not yet been called up to the Super Eagles, his performance in Ligue 1 suggests that it is only a matter of time before he makes his full international debut.
