Smart City FC Banned for Two Years Over Security Breach

The Lagos State Football Association LSFA has handed Smart City FC a two year ban from all football related activities following a violent incident during their FA Cup match against Inter Lagos. The decision, outlined in a letter dated February 14, 2025, was based on reports from match officials detailing serious security breaches.

During the match at Legacy Pitch, player Bankole Afeez confronted and harassed the referee. At the same time, a supporter of Smart City assaulted the official, striking him in the right eye and causing a severe injury. The chaos escalated as other fans attempted to attack key football officials.

The LSFA has demanded that Smart City identify the supporter responsible for the attack for legal action and present Afeez before the Disciplinary Committee. Additionally, the club has been fined ₦1 million for the referee’s medical expenses and an extra ₦5 million for their failure to control their supporters. Both fines must be paid within seven days.

The LSFA and the Lagos State Referees Council have also been directed to report the threats to life and property to the Commissioner of Police. While the punishment is severe, Smart City retains the right to appeal.
