Iwobi Discusses Tactical Constraints at AFCON Under Peseiro

Alex Iwobi, the Super Eagles midfielder, opened up about the tactical limitations he faced during the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON under the guidance of then head coach Jose Peseiro. As Nigeria gears up for a friendly match against Ghana in Marrakesh, Iwobi reflected on the team’s performance at the AFCON, particularly the 1-2 defeat to Ivory Coast in the final.

Iwobi pointed out the challenges of playing in the host country’s environment, acknowledging the advantage the Ivorian team had with the support of their fans. However, he emphasized that the Super Eagles were not intimidated but struggled to implement their game plan effectively.

Playing a game every four days in those conditions and the role I was asked to do alongside Frank is literally like second balls, run, keep the ball, Iwobi explained during an interview.

Iwobi’s responsibilities were focused on ball retention and distribution, limiting his opportunities to contribute creatively. Everybody is like why is Alex not being creative but I was told to keep the ball, manage the ball, change it from left to right, he added.
