Today marks the 45th anniversary of a momentous occasion in Nigerian football history the day the Super Eagles, then known as the Green Eagles, lifted their first ever Africa Cup of Nations AFCON trophy on home soil in Lagos.
On March 22, 1980, the Green Eagles rose to the occasion in front of a roaring 80,000 strong crowd at the National Stadium. They defeated tournament favourites Algeria 3-0, with Segun ‘Mathematical’ Odegbami scoring twice and Muda Lawal adding a third goal to seal the victory.
The celebrations that followed swept across the nation. President Shehu Shagari personally lifted the Unity Cup alongside team captain Christian Chukwu, marking a crowning moment for Nigerian football. The team’s achievement was rewarded with houses, cars, and cash prizes, cementing their place as national heroes.
