Odegbami backs Morocco for AFCON 2025, doubts Nigeria’s chances

From December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, Morocco will host the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON, with 24 teams competing for continental glory. Legendary Nigerian footballer Segun Odegbami has shared his thoughts on the tournament, casting doubts on Nigeria’s chances while tipping Morocco to potentially lift the trophy.

While acknowledging that Nigeria can advance from Group C, which includes Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda, Odegbami is sceptical about the Super Eagles’ ability to go all the way. He attributes this to a lack of a strong midfield, an ageing defence, and what he describes as one of the least experienced coaches the team has ever had.

Odegbami highlighted Morocco’s well-prepared infrastructure, top tier facilities, and consistent development since the 1990s as key reasons for their strength. With the tournament coinciding with the festive season, he predicts it will be one of the most successful AFCON editions.

Segun Odegbami’s analysis of Nigeria’s chances at AFCON 2025 is rooted in reality. Although the Super Eagles boast a lethal attack led by world class strikers, their lack of balance particularly in midfield and defence could hinder their title aspirations. For years, Nigeria’s midfield has struggled to provide creative support and defensive cover, a critical factor in modern football success.

Odegbami’s concerns about coaching hold weight. With the current coach being relatively inexperienced on the big stage, tactical adaptability could be a concern against stronger opponents. Without significant improvements in team cohesion and tactical setup, the Super Eagles are likely to face stiff competition in the knockout stages.

However, football is unpredictable. Nigeria’s rich history at AFCON, combined with the possibility of emerging talents stepping up, could defy the odds. But as things stand, Odegbami’s view that Morocco is better positioned seems realistic. Nigeria’s success will depend on whether they address their weaknesses before the tournament begins.
