Patrick Dorgu commits to Denmark as Danish FA boosts recruitment

Patrick Dorgu, a highly rated Lecce defender, is officially cap tied to Denmark after earning his fourth appearance for the national team during their UEFA Nations League match against Spain. The 20 year old, born to Nigerian parents, had previously been eligible to play for Nigeria. However, his recent competitive outings for Denmark now make him ineligible for the Super Eagles under FIFA’s dual nationality rules.

Dorgu follows Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing and Portland Thorns defender Isabella Obaze as Nigerian-eligible players who have committed to Denmark. The Danish Football Association DBU has also provisionally secured the international futures of several other Nigerian talents, including Newcastle United’s William Osula, Manchester United’s Chido Obi Martin, and Sturm Graz’s Tochi Chukwuani.

Despite efforts by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to bring Billing into the Nigerian fold, the midfielder chose to remain with Denmark, eventually becoming cap-tied after his appearance in a UEFA Nations League match in 2022.
