Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Nigerian winger Nathan Tella is fit and available for Sunday’s Bundesliga encounter against St. Pauli. Tella, 25, was substituted at half-time in the goalless draw against Union Berlin last weekend after reportedly feeling dizzy.
He was taken to hospital for precautionary checks but returned to training during the week. Addressing the media on Friday, Alonso assured fans that there are no lingering concerns: “Yes. There’s no problem [with Nathan Tella],” the coach said.
Tella has made 22 league appearances for Die Werkself this season, scoring two goals in what is his debut Bundesliga campaign.

Nathan Tella’s green light to face St. Pauli is welcome news—not just for Bayer Leverkusen’s fans, but for Nigerian football followers who’ve seen the winger’s Bundesliga transition as a breakthrough moment. His brief scare with dizziness last weekend was a reminder of the fragile balance between fitness and performance in modern football, especially as clubs compete on multiple fronts.
What matters now is that Leverkusen have managed the situation with care. In a title-chasing campaign, they could’ve rushed him back—but they didn’t. That’s a sign of smart man-management by Xabi Alonso, and a sign of the trust they place in Tella’s long-term value.
As the season enters its final stretch, Tella’s creativity, pace, and work ethic will be key for Leverkusen—especially in tight, tactical games like the one against Union Berlin. The Nigerian’s recovery is timely. His impact could be decisive.
