NFF President Mourns the Passing of Former CAF Leader Issa Hayatou

Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation NFF, has expressed deep condolences to the Cameroonian football community and the broader African football family following the death of Issa Hayatou, former President of the Confederation of African Football CAF. Hayatou passed away in Paris on Thursday, just one day before his 78th birthday, after battling a prolonged illness.

Hayatou, a former Cameroonian 400m and 800m champion, significantly impacted African football during his tenure as CAF President from March 10, 1988, to March 16, 2017. Gusau praised Hayatou’s dedication to elevating African football, describing him as a leader of great integrity and character. Hayatou also served as the Secretary of the Federation Cameroonaise de Football FECAFOOT in the 1970s and briefly as Acting President of FIFA from October 2015 to February 2016, following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.

Despite his extensive influence and leadership, Hayatouโ€™s tenure as CAF President ended in March 2017 when Ahmad of Madagascar defeated him at an elective Congress in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Gusau, along with the entire Nigerian football community, mourns Hayatou’s passing and offers prayers for his eternal rest and the strength of the Cameroonian and African football communities during this loss.
