More than a hundred referees across Bayelsa State have been trained in modern officiating techniques ahead of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, widely known as the Prosperity Cup. This grassroots football event is Nigeria’s largest, and the refresher course aims to elevate the standard of officiating in line with global best practices.
The initiative, organized by the Prosperity Cup committee, was executed in collaboration with the Nigeria Referees Association NRA, Bayelsa State Referees Council, Bayelsa State Football Association, and the Ministry of Sports Development. The training took place across all eight local government areas and included both theoretical and practical sessions, concluding with on-field exercises at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
Renowned FIFA referee assessor Peter Edibe highlighted the significance of the training, especially with the involvement of young aspiring referees aged eight to twelve. He expressed optimism that the participants would apply their new knowledge effectively during the tournament.
CAF instructor and NFF Referees Committee member Chukwudi Chukwujekwu commended the initiative, emphasizing that such programs would raise officiating standards nationwide. He encouraged other states to implement similar training for their referees.
