Despite previous losses to South Africa, Waldrum highlighted the improved defensive organisation of the Falcons as the key to their success. We were much more organised than the previous times we played them, he stated. The coach noted South Africa’s pre match talk but chose to focus on his team’s quiet confidence. That’s why I felt confident. I believe in our team and knew we would be a tough team to break down, even with their talent, he added.

Waldrum also pointed out the differences in team rosters and the emphasis on defensive organisation prepared in the days leading up to the World Cup. Since we performed at the World Cup, the players have bought into what I want them to do defensively, he concluded.
