The inaugural Archbishop Margaret Benson Idahosa Edo State Women’s Football League kicked off on Saturday at the Benson Idahosa University sports ground in Benin City. The vibrant opening ceremony was graced by the First Lady of the Idahosa Dynasty, Rev. Laurie Idahosa, who performed the ceremonial kickoff on behalf of the cup donor, Archbishop Dr M.E. Idahosa.
Three matches marked the start of the tournament:
- Benin Red Soil Queens secured a 2-0 win over Palace Queens.
- Brave Heart Ladies defeated Genesis Queens 2-0.
- Bravoss FC triumphed 2-0 against Heart Peak Sports Club.
This first of its kind league aims to develop women’s football in Edo State, a vision championed by the Edo State Football Association FA. Chairman Fred Newton Erhunmwunse emphasised the importance of the initiative, thanking Archbishop Idahosa for her support in donating the trophy and resources.
The tournament aligns Edo FA with other states like Osun in advancing grassroots women’s football. The event also drew dignitaries, including representatives of Benson Idahosa University, members of the Church of God Mission International, and key football stakeholders.
The second round of group matches is set to continue at the same venue, fostering competition and development in women’s football within the state.
