Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to be handed a rare starting opportunity for Nottingham Forest against Brighton this weekend, following an injury to first choice forward Chris Wood.
Awoniyi has endured a frustrating campaign, largely playing a substitute role behind the in-form Wood, who has scored 18 goals and registered three assists in 29 league matches. In contrast, Awoniyi has only started twice in 22 appearances, scoring once.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, head coach Nuno Espírito Santo confirmed Wood’s absence due to a hip injury sustained during international duty. “He went for a scan today. He’s not going to be available for this game,” Nuno said.
With several players returning from international breaks in varying physical conditions, Nuno noted that squad decisions would be finalised after assessing everyone, including new signing Ramón Sosa.
Awoniyi, who was left out of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying squad due to inconsistent form, now has a timely chance to prove his worth as Forest continue their push for a Champions League spot.
