NPFL partners with Hungarian universities to support players’ education

The Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL has taken a major step toward securing the future of its players by partnering with Hungarian universities to provide educational opportunities alongside football careers.

NPFL Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, met with representatives from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, led by Dr. Zoltán Lakner, in Abuja to discuss scholarship programs and skill development initiatives for young footballers.

Elegbeleye emphasized the importance of balancing education with sports, noting that football careers can be short lived. We are targeting our youths, particularly the younger generation of premier league players, to encourage them to mix education with football. Football careers can be short, with many retiring by 30 or even earlier. What happens after that? We want to equip them with skills and knowledge that will sustain them long after their playing days are over.

Through this partnership, NPFL players with senior secondary school certificates or GCE qualifications will have the opportunity to study modern courses such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics engineering, and other career-oriented disciplines.

Dr. Zoltán Lakner praised Nigeria’s sporting talent and highlighted the importance of merging education with football. Nigeria’s athletic excellence is undeniable. By combining education with football, these young players can make immense contributions to society, both during and after their careers, he said.

This initiative is set to provide NPFL players with career options beyond football, ensuring they can transition into other fields after retirement.
