Amuneke Heartbroken Over Coach Obi’s Tragic Death in Road Accident

Heartland FC Technical Manager, Emmanuel Amuneke, expressed his deep sorrow over the untimely death of the club’s former coach, Christian Obi. Obi tragically lost his life in a road accident on August 23, 2024, as Heartland FC’s team bus was en route to the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT Preseason Tournament in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Amuneke, who was meant to join the team in Abakaliki the following day, rushed to the scene of the accident and remained at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, until late Friday evening, doing all he could to assist in the situation. The 1994 CAF Footballer of the Year shared how devastated he felt, noting that Coach Obi had been a great support to the club and played an integral role in the team’s operations.

Obi, a former Flying Eagles goalkeeper, had a storied career, including helping Nigeria win a bronze medal at the 1985 FIFA U20 World Cup and playing in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. His passing leaves a lasting void in Nigerian football.
