BSAFCON Sand Eagles Not Ready for Competition Olawale

Former skipper of Nigeria’s Sand Eagles, Isiaka Olawale, has voiced concerns about the team’s readiness for the 2024 Beach Soccer African Cup of Nations BSAFCON. Despite being reinstated by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, after several years of absence, the Sand Eagles are set to face Mauritania in the qualifiers.

Olawale highlighted the lack of preparation time and the inexperience of the squad as significant challenges. It’s going to affect us because it’s been over three years now. The time factor is very short. Most of the players, maybe those selected for this particular competition, are new to the game. I think almost 70 to 80 per cent are new players.

He emphasized the need for adequate preparation, suggesting that if the team can train together for at least three weeks to a month before the competition, it could make a substantial difference. The most important thing is that if they can put the house together and the boys can assemble themselves for at least one month before the competition, or even three weeks, I think it will be okay.

Editorial

The concerns raised by Isiaka Olawale about the Sand Eagles’ readiness for the BSAFCON qualifiers are valid and should be addressed with urgency. The long absence from competitive play and the introduction of many new players present a formidable challenge. However, it also offers an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen the team with fresh talent and new strategies.

Olawale’s call for a dedicated preparation period is crucial. The importance of team cohesion and familiarity with the game cannot be overstated, especially in a sport like beach soccer, where quick decision making and teamwork are vital. The Nigeria Football Federation should heed this advice and ensure that the Sand Eagles have adequate time to prepare and build a competitive edge.

Reinstating the team after a long hiatus should come with a structured development plan. This includes regular training camps, friendly matches, and perhaps even a local league to keep the players engaged and in top form. Investing in the team’s preparation now will not only enhance their chances in the upcoming qualifiers but also lay a strong foundation for future competitions.

The Sand Eagles have a history of success in beach soccer, and with the right support and preparation, they can return to their former glory. Fans and stakeholders alike are hopeful that the necessary steps will be taken to ensure that the team is ready to compete and excel on the continental stage.
