Crystal Palace Goalkeeper Visits NFF President After Rejected Call Up

Sixteen months after turning down a call up from the Flying Eagles, Crystal Palace goalkeeper Owen Goodman has visited Nigeria Football Federation NFF President Ibrahim Gusau. Born in England to a British father and a Nigerian mother, Goodman is eligible to play for England, Nigeria, and Canada.

Goodman had previously accepted a call up to Canadaโ€™s U20 training camp in April 2022. However, he did not honour the invitation to the Flying Eagles training camp in January 2023, as he was waiting for a call up to Englandโ€™s Menโ€™s Elite League Squad, which he eventually received. The Anglo Canadian Nigerian goalkeeper has represented England U20s twice, playing against the United States and Romania.

Goodman joined Crystal Palace as an under13 player and signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2021. Though he has not yet played for the first team, he has made the Premier League matchday squad four times. Last season, he was on loan at Colchester United, where he made 40 appearances and achieved four clean sheets.

Editorial

We are pleased to see Owen Goodman reconnecting with his Nigerian roots by visiting NFF President Ibrahim Gusau. This visit marks a potential shift in his international career, one that could see him don the green and white jersey shortly. It is heartening to witness players like Goodman considering their options and exploring the possibility of representing Nigeria on the global stage.

Goodmanโ€™s journey reflects the complex decisions faced by dual nationality players. Balancing opportunities and allegiances can be challenging, and his previous choices highlight the importance of strategic career planning. His recent visit to Nigeria suggests a desire to contribute to his motherโ€™s homeland, potentially bringing his skills and experience gained in England and Canada to the Super Eagles.

The presence of a goalkeeper with Goodmanโ€™s calibre can significantly bolster the national teamโ€™s depth. His training and match experience at Crystal Palace and Colchester United equip him with valuable skills that can benefit Nigeria. We hope this visit is a precursor to more active involvement with the national team.

This scenario underscores the importance of fostering positive relationships between players and national football associations. Encouraging dual nationality players to feel a sense of belonging and pride in representing Nigeria can enrich the teamโ€™s diversity and talent pool. We look forward to seeing how Goodmanโ€™s potential inclusion will impact the Super Eaglesโ€™ future performances.
