Bayelsa Kids Cup Edition Seven Nembe LGA Emerges Champions

The 7th edition of the Bayelsa Kids Cup concluded in grand style at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa. Nembe Local Government Area LGA emerged victorious, defeating Yenagoa LGA with a scoreline of 2-0 in the final match. The event was attended by numerous dignitaries and enthusiastic football spectators.

The tournament kicked off on May 18th at the Bishop Dimitri Grammar School premises with seven teams, excluding Brass LGA, which opted out hours before the event began. After the preliminary rounds, four teams Nembe, Ekeremor, Yenagoa, and Sagbama LGAs secured their spots in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Yenagoa and Sagbama played to a 1-1 draw, with Yenagoa advancing after an 8-7 victory in a penalty shootout. Nembe secured their place in the final by defeating Ekeremor 3-0. In the grand finale held on May 27th, Nembe clinched the trophy with a decisive win over Yenagoa, while Sagbama defeated Ekeremor 2-0 in the third-place match.

The competition’s coordinator, Coach Ada Gwegwe, expressed gratitude to the sponsors and thanked the dignitaries for their presence. Individual awards were presented, with Stanley Concord of Nembe LGA winning the Highest Goal Scorer award with six goals, Collins Precious of Sagbama LGA being named Best Goalkeeper, and Richard Felix of Nembe LGA receiving the Most Valuable Player award.

Other individual awards included Most Skillful Player for Esueni Akali of Southern Ijaw, Youngest Player for Dominion Frank of Ekeremor, Best Defender for Bassey Destiny of Yenagoa LGA, and Best Referee for Bethel Paradise, who officiated the finals.

Dignitaries in attendance included Hon. Wisdom Fafi, former Speaker Rt. Hon. Tonye Isenah PhD, Director of Sports Sir Braveman Wodi, former Sports Commissioner Hon. Ebikitin Diongoli, South South Vice President of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria Mr Kali Gwegwe, and former Senior Special Assistant on Religious Affairs Rev. Vincent McDowell. Others included the Director General of the Prosperity Cup Mr Ono Akpe, Tournament Director Mr Perela Aboro, Deputy Director General Deacon Emmanuel Appah, CEO of Official CitiBoy Concept Mr Joshua Igere Glory, and ex-internationals Mr Peter Neketien and Mr Kelvin Etemike, who was unveiled as Chief Scouts for the Prosperity Cup.
