Zimbabwe Coach Praises Uyo Facilities Ahead of Nigeria Clash

Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees has expressed his delight with the facilities in Uyo, Nigeria, as his team prepares for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles on Tuesday.

Despite facing travel delays due to a cancelled flight, the Warriors arrived in Uyo and quickly settled into what Nees described as a โ€œfineโ€ and spacious hotel, previously used by Nigeriaโ€™s national team. โ€œThe hotel is very spacious, we cannot complain about that,โ€ Nees said, speaking to the Warriorsโ€™ media team.

The Zimbabwe coach was particularly impressed with the quality of the training pitch in Uyo after holding a session on Sunday. โ€œYou can see for yourself, we would be happy to have something like this in our own country โ€“ very good, impressed,โ€ he noted.

Looking ahead to matchday, Nees is optimistic that the stadium pitch will be even better. โ€œThe training pitch is soft, not too hard. The stadium pitch, I expect even better,โ€ he added.

Despite travel disruptions, the Warriors are focused and eager to make the most of their time in Uyo as they face one of their toughest tests in the World Cup qualifiers.

Editorial

Michael Neesโ€™ glowing praise for Uyoโ€™s facilities is a testament to Nigeriaโ€™s growing reputation for hosting world class football events. In a qualification campaign often marred by logistical challenges and sub-par conditions across Africa, the ability to welcome visiting teams with high-quality accommodations and pristine training pitches is not just hospitality itโ€™s strategy.

The Super Eaglesโ€™ home advantage begins long before kickoff. Comfortable surroundings and excellent pitches create an environment where the hosts feel settled and confident, while visiting teams, despite their admiration, must adjust quickly. That said, Zimbabweโ€™s positivity is commendable. It reflects their professionalism and willingness to focus on football rather than distractions.

We believe maintaining such standards is essential for Nigeriaโ€™s football image and influence on the continent. The Nest of Champions and its facilities are a source of pride, and this reputation can only help attract international fixtures and inspire young Nigerian athletes.

As the Warriors prepare for a tough contest, we hope their praise for Uyo is echoed in other parts of Africa not just for admiration but as a challenge for other nations to elevate their standards. After all, African football deserves the best.
