Arokodare sets personal scoring record in Genk’s 1-1 draw vs. Charleroi

Super Eagles hopeful Tolu Arokodare has surpassed his personal best for goals in a single league season after scoring in Racing Genk’s 1-1 draw with Sporting Charleroi in the Jupiler Pro League on Friday night.

Arokodare’s previous record was 15 goals, achieved in the 2020 season while playing for Latvian side Valmiera. After equaling that tally against Standard Liège on February 14, he officially broke it with his 16th goal of the season, heading home from a Jarne Steuckers cross in the 70th minute.

Genk was denied victory despite his efforts when Daan Heymans converted a late penalty for Charleroi in the 90th minute.

Arokodare has now scored against 12 teams this season, including Club Brugge, Anderlecht, and Antwerp, further cementing his position as the Jupiler Pro League’s top scorer.

The 24 year old striker will be hoping his goal-scoring form earns him a call-up to Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Editorial

Tolu Arokodare’s goal-scoring exploits in Belgium have been nothing short of impressive. Breaking his record and leading the Jupiler Pro League’s scoring charts at 24 is a testament to his improvement and consistency in front of goal.

For Nigeria, Arokodare’s form presents an interesting selection dilemma. With Victor Osimhen’s spot secured, competition for backup striking roles is fierce. The likes of Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi remain in contention, but Arokodare’s recent performances cannot be ignored. If he continues scoring at this rate, he could be a valuable asset for the Super Eagles, particularly as a Plan B in tight matches.

As the international break approaches, all eyes will be on whether Eric Chelle rewards Arokodare’s form with a well deserved call up. Given Nigeria’s recent attacking struggles, injecting a confident, in-form striker into the squad could be exactly what the Super Eagles need.
