Interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen is intensifying his search for a creative midfielder to address Nigeria’s goal scoring struggles. Despite an abundance of attacking talent, the team has found it challenging to break down low block defences, an issue highlighted during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The team managed to qualify for the tournament but struggled in key games, including a narrow win over Libya and a loss to Rwanda. With six matches remaining in the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers, starting against Rwanda in March, Eguavoen is focused on finding a playmaker who can unlock defences and create scoring opportunities.
Eguavoen acknowledged the discrepancy between players’ prolific performances at their clubs and their difficulty replicating the same form in national colours. “They are scoring goals in their club sides, but when it comes to the game, they don’t score goals. I keep asking the same questions,” he said.
He emphasised the need for a midfielder with flair and creativity to deliver decisive passes, adding, “We are still looking for that player who has that flair and creativity a good playmaker who can put the ball into space.”
The Super Eagles scored just six goals in five AFCON qualifiers, a stark contrast to other African powerhouses. While Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen contributed two goals each, other forwards, including Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Boniface, struggled to make an impact.
