Abia Warriors, Kwara United Face Penalties for Fielding Ineligible Players

Abia Warriors and Kwara United are under scrutiny and risk serious sanctions after defying orders from the NPFL and NFF Players Status and Arbitration Committee PSAC by fielding ineligible players on Matchday 10. The directive required indebted clubs to clear overdue payments before allowing newly registered players to participate. Despite this, both teams proceeded with ineligible line-ups, violating league protocols.

The NPFL COO, Davidson Owumi, had issued a clear notice to these clubs, suspending the licenses of newly registered players until debts were resolved. While several clubs, including Enyimba, responded by clearing debts or making partial payments, Abia Warriors and Kwara United defied the ban. Abia Warriors fielded eleven ineligible players in their home game against Heartland FC, which they lost 2-0. Similarly, Kwara United included ineligible players in their match against Akwa United, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.

In response, the PSAC has demanded explanations from both clubs. Failure to provide satisfactory responses within five days could lead to severe repercussions, including hefty fines and potential points deductions. Under Article 19 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code, clubs found guilty of fielding ineligible players may face forfeiture of matches, financial penalties, and possible relegation.
